Don't lose Wi?Fi when you change your password

From 6 January 2026 there will be an update to the security for the Eduroam wireless network at UiO. If you have incorrect Eduroam settings, you will need to set it up again the next time you change your password — or preferably before.

Setup with the app

The wireless network at UiO is called Eduroam. If you have a laptop, mobile phone or tablet, Eduroam is the network you should use. But did you know that Eduroam must be configured using the geteduroam app to achieve the correct security level? UiO?owned coputers and phones that are managed by the operations system should have the correct settings, but if you have unmanaged devices that use the Eduroam wireless network, it can be a good idea to double?check that the configuration is correct. If you did not use the geteduroam app when you set up the wireless network on an unmanaged phone/tablet/laptop, you should set it up again now to avoid losing the wireless Internet connection the next time you change your password.

You may lose network access when you change your password

As UiO tightens security for the wireless network, devices with incorrect Eduroam settings will lose network access and will need to be reconfigured. To prevent this from happening to many people at once, the change will take effect for your devices only when you change your password (which you do at least every 14 months). A reminder about this will be posted on the password change page so that those affected remember to set up Eduroam again if they lose network access. You are welcome to set up Eduroam with the app today. If you have already set it up correctly, it does no harm to set it up once more.

  • It is wise to reconfigure Eduroam before changing your password, because if you lose network access it may be difficult to download the app needed for setup.
  • If you lose network access after changing your password you can download the app using mobile 4G/5G on your phone or use UiO’s guest network (uioguest) for a laptop. But the easiest option is to download the app and set up Eduroam correctly before you change your password. Preferably do it now.

How to set up Eduroam correctly

If you want to set up Eduroam again on your device, you can find instructions on the UiO wireless network page. It's quite simple, so we summarize it here:

  1. Go to the website eduroam.app.
  2. Download and open the app for the correct platform (e.g. Windows, Android, iOS, etc.).
  3. Search for the University of Oslo and log in with username@uio.no and your UiO password.
  4. When the app asks if you want to save Eduroam, click the option to save, and that's it.

You can find instructions and more information on UiO's IT Services' pages about the wireless network.

Strengthening security

Many years ago UiO had its own network, but we switched to using only Eduroam, since it is the standard for educational institutions worldwide. During the transition it was allowed to connect devices with slightly different settings to make things easier. Some of these settings are now outdated and have a lower security level than UiO requires. Therefore, devices such as phones and laptops that use the outdated settings will lose network connectivity when the change takes effect. If you set up Eduroam with the app, you will not notice the change.
