TIK9050 – Midway evaluation
Course content
The midway evaluation is arranged approximately halfway through the candidate’s PhD period. In this seminar, the candidate presents his/her work so far and receives feedback from to commentators appointed by TIK. The main intent of the evaluation is to provide the candidate with constructive advice towards the completion of the PhD project.
Learning outcome
- Present ongoing work and schedule for the project.
- Receive feedback on own work and project development.
- Further specify the work.
Admission to the course
Acceptance to the PhD-programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, direction Technology, Innovation and Culture is required.
Teaching
In the seminar, the candidate is to present his/her work so far. The seminar is open to the public and is scheduled for 1 hour and 45 minutes. The candidate will start by presenting his/her work, approx. 30 minutes. Then the opponents will comment and discuss the project, work done and work still to be done, with the candidate. The opponents should have agreed beforehand on the division of labor. The opponents have approx. 60 minutes in total. In the last phase of the seminar, the discussion is opened to all those present, and members of the audience may contribute with comments or questions to the candidate, approx. 15 minutes.
Head of the PhD program at TIK, or someone appointed in his/her place, will introduce the seminar and moderate the discussion. In addition to the candidate and opponents, the supervisors should be present if possible.
Examination
Written material
The candidate is to submit the written material as basis for evaluation two-three weeks before the seminar is scheduled to take place. The material should include an overview of the work done so far, including the central research questions, theoretical framework and methodology. It should also include a plan for the remaining work. Candidates who process personal data as part of their dissertation must show that this is done in a safe, trustworthy and legal manner. Proof of passing the Faculty of Social Sciences’ mandatory online course in personal data protection must be attached by all candidates.
At least one article/chapter, but preferably two, should be submitted as materials for the discussants at the midway seminar. The written material should be maximum 50 pages, including articles/chapters. The written material is to be sent to TIKs administration, which will forward it to the supervisor(s) and opponents. It will be made available by the administration to others interested upon request.
Opposition
Two opponents are appointed, preferably among TIKs senior staff or others with a close cooperation or joint research with TIK. Supervisors are of course not eligible. The intention is that the opponents may also take on an informal mentoring role during the last stages of the PhD.
Formal evaluation
After the seminar, the opponents, supervisor(s) and Head of the Program have a short meeting to summarize the seminar without an audience present. The opponents and the Head of the Program make the formal decision of the seminar as pass/fail. If the seminar is evaluated as 'fail', the candidate will have to revise and resubmit the written material, and then attempt to pass the midway evaluation 2-6 months later.
Language of examination
The seminar must be held in English or a Scandinavian language.
