FHE4040 – Project Planning and Research Ethics

Course content

In this course, students will learn how to plan, execute and critically evaluate research projects. They will then apply this knowledge to their own proposed master project, writing up a detailed project plan. During the course, students will present their own and evaluate fellow students proposed master project considering relevant health sciences and public health challenges as well as research ethical issues. In the course the students will learn how to develop research questions led by theory and relevant empirical studies. They will learn how to use methodological guidelines relevant for the selected research design as well as strategies for analyses of data. Aspects of validity, reliability and potential biases will be addressed.

The course introduces the history and development of medical and health related research ethics, its core normative principles and legal regulations and the application of these principles in quantitative and qualitative research on human beings, animals and / or existing data as well as data to be sampled. In addition, the course accommodates discussions of issues pertaining to research integrity and breaches of good research and dissemination practices.?Finally, the course addresses how to provide for safe storage of sensitive data and prepare for applications to research ethics committee (REC) the Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research (SIKT and others).

Learning outcome

  • The student knows the core principles and values for planning, executing and critically evaluating projects within health sciences and public health research.

  • The student knows how to conduct a literature review and incorporate previous literature into a research project plan.

  • The student can set up a coherent research plan including relevant research questions, data, methods, theory and the research ethical issues involved.

  • The student has extensive knowledge of the core ethical principles, norms, guidelines and legal regulations of medical and health research.

  • The student can set up a coherent research protocol in a highly relevant, reflexive and ethical responsible way.

Teaching

Lectures, seminars and student work with own research protocol.

Obligatory coursework in ethics to be eligible to take the exam.

If you are ill or have another valid reason for being absent from compulsory activities, you can apply to take the compulsory activity again.

Examination

Submission of a research protocol.

Examination and grading at The Faculty of Medicine.

Language of examination

The examination questions are given in English. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
