Course content

This course provides a high-level understanding of digital technologies and programming, focusing on tools, computation, algorithms, and data processing. It covers core aspects of digitalization that enable you to theoretically structure and discuss digital transformation processes across various sectors and disciplines. The course explores the wider implications of digitalization, emphasizing its impact on society and the environment.

You will gain the vocabulary and critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate the effects of digitalization within your own field of study.

This course is the mandatory introductory course of the Digitalization Certificate and introduces the concepts and terms you will meet in elective courses.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you can:

  • Describe examples of digital technologies and how they can be employed to address information needs.
  • Explain and apply basic principles of computer programming, algorithmic thinking, and data analysis.
  • Explain what digitization, digital innovation, digitalization and digital transformation mean.
  • Discuss social and environmental impacts of digitalization.
  • Form a comprehensive view on digitalization though interdisciplinary group work.

Admission to the course

Students admitted to the?Digitalization certificate are guaranteed admission to this course. Other students will have to wait until the secondary admission periode (etteranmeldingen) and apply then.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

You must currently be enrolled in a bachelor's programme, be an incoming exchange student at the bachelor's level or be enrolled in integrated 5-year master's programmes or 6-year professional programmes at the University of Oslo (UiO).

Students must have completed at least 60 ECTS at bachelor's level (one year of full-time studies) at the University of Oslo before applying for admission to the course.
