GEO4080 – Applied geographical information management

Course content

The course is a practical introduction into geographical information handling. You will use modern computer technology to sample, manage, analyse and publish geographical data.

Learning outcome

Knowledge and skills:
The students will learn

  • Reading geographical data
  • Producing of simple maps
  • Simple vector and raster analysis
  • Basic principles of remote sensing and presentations of images

Attitudes:

  • The course aims at fostering and developing scientific curiosity around the course theme and a critical reflection of representativeness, accuracy, reliability and importance of the data and results

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

Will be given as a two weeks intensive course with lectures and computer lab. Daily obligatory lab assignments, which all have to be passed.

Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Studies administration, email address: studieinfo@geo.uio.no

Examination

You pass the course when all 10 lab reports are approved.
