Course description
Course content
This course introduces you to aspects of contemporary society and/or politics through academic readings in English and Japanese, as well as primary sources in Japanese. This course is closely related to ongoing research, and its concrete focus will vary from year to year. Rather than passively receiving existing knowledge, you will be able to join the teacher in exploring new perspectives.?
Learning outcome
In principle, this course uses both Japanese- and English-language materials.?
- The student will learn to analyze existing theories, methods, and interpretations within Japanese studies, critically assess existing research on contemporary Japan, and work independently on empirical and theoretical issues.
- The student will learn to analyze academic problems within the study of contemporary society, culture, and politics in Japan.
- The student will gain a thorough understanding of central methods and one or more important scientific theories and theoretical debates related to the analysis of Japanese culture and society.
- The student will acquire the ability to apply relevant theoretical perspectives and research methods in fieldwork and text analysis in connection with Japanese studies.
- The student will gain specialized insight into one or more subjects (e.g., history, modernity, political institutions and development, the rule of law, culture, social and ethnic relations, gender, literature, language, religion, education, philosophy, media, and environment) within Japanese studies.

This course is for students admitted to Japanese Studies (programme option).
Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.They will be given additional readings and assignments to make up for the fact that they cannot read the Japanese texts.?

The course consists of 10 classes of 3 hours each. Students are expected to come prepared and to participate actively in discussions.?

Examination
The exam is a 10-page paper (2300 characters per page, excluding spacing) on a topic of your own choice, subject to prior approval by the teacher.?
Language of examination
You can write in English or a Scandinavian language.?
Grading scale
