Frequently asked questions

As a new student, you probably have many questions. On this website, we have gathered answers to questions that students have previously asked us.

Who I contact if I have questions about attendance, mandatory activities, exams, etc.?

For any questions that are not academic, you can contact the study administration at: henvendelser@ifikk.uio.no.

I have signed for the wrong variant.

You can switch variants in Studentweb as long as the registration for courses is open. If you encounter any issues, please contact henvendelser@ifikk.uio.no.

Which seminar group should I choose?

It is your responsibility to select a seminar group that fits your schedule. The timetable for the seminar groups can be found on the course page for the relevant semester.

How do I change seminar groups?

You can change your seminar group yourself n Studentweb or use the application form. Please see more information about changing seminar groups in Exphil.

What do I do if I am sick and cannot attend a seminar?

In Exphil, attendance is mandatory in four of the six first seminars, abd valid absences are not granted for any reason. This means that if you are sick and cannot attend a seminar, you do not need to take any action. You must ensure that you do not miss more than two of the first six seminars.

Which exam format should I  choose?

If you are in the self-study variant, you need to select the exam format referred to as "Self-study variant" in Studentweb. If you are in the seminar variant, you should select the exam format called "Home exam and assignment" in Studentweb. Please see more information about the exams in the different variants.

Can I get an extended deadline for mandatory submissions?

Yes. If you need a postponement of up to one week, you can use self-reporting. You can do this by submitting an application without a medical certificate or other documentation.

For extensions longer than one week, you must provide valid documentation.

You can find the application form and more information here. Remember to specify how many days of extension you are requesting.

Are aids allowed during the exam in the self-study variant?

No, no aids of the type pre-written notes or textbooks are allowed.

I have previously passed mandatory activities, but I did not take the exam in the relevant semester. Can I enroll in the course again just to take the exam?

In the seminar variant, mandatory activities must be completed in the same semester as the exam is taken. You cannot reuse mandatory activities that you have passed in a previous semester. However, it is possible to register for EXPHIL03 just to take the exam, but you would then be in the self-study variant, which involves a four-hour school exam in Silurveien.

Can I withdraw from the exam and try again later?

Yes, you can withdraw from the exam and attempt it again another semester. If you withdraw before the deadline, it is not considered an attempt.

What should I do if I get sick on the day of the exam?

To avoid using examination attempt, you can apply for valid absence from the exam through the HF website regarding illness during exams or deferred exams.

You can also apply for a deferred exam in the seminar variant if you had a valid reason for absence. Deferred exams are not offered in the self-study variant.

Valid absences must be documented and can be approved based on your own illness or that of someone you are caring for, childbirth, a death in the immediate family, or other compelling reasons beyond your control. This must be documented with appropriate evidence, such as a medical certificate for illness, an obituary or funeral program for a death, or notification of military service, etc.
