Knowledge
The candidate obtains a broad knowledge of archaeology and history, Old Norse and Irish philology, as well as a more in-depth focus on their particular area of study within this range. This allows the candidate to relate their subjects of interest to the wider field of research in the Viking and Medieval period, while establishing an advanced understanding of research methodology and research design appropriate to the nature of the candidate’s studies
Skills
The candidate will learn to apply the methodologies of the chosen disciplines and identify and apply relevant theoretical frameworks to their studies of interest. Under supervision, the candidate will carry out an independent research project within Viking and Medieval studies in accordance with established norms and research ethics. Candidates will be able to practice their skills in relevant work environments through a project course or semester.
General competence
The candidate will develop competence in critical thinking, and will learn to analyze, evaluate and develop arguments and well-reasoned conclusions. These skills are essential when solving problems in any field.
Students also develop the written and oral communication skills that are crucial to effectively convey ideas and arguments, and the argumentation skills required to construct coherent, persuasive arguments based on evidence.
The programme’s width teaches the student to think interdisciplinary, learning to make connections across fields and disciplines. In addition, the student learns to effectively find, evaluate, and use information, and to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.
By developing these general competences, students are well-equipped for a variety of career paths, including education, media, public relations, business, public service, and more. In addition, the skills they acquire are valuable for lifelong learning and personal development.
