New AI tool available for all UiO users

NotebookLM is a powerful AI-driven tool from Google designed to help users create, organize, and analyze content. It will be useful for both students and staff and is now available for free to everyone at UiO.

What is NotebookLM?

Google refers to NotebookLM as a personal research assistant powered by artificial intelligence (AI). It can draft summaries, explanations, and answers based on content uploaded by the user, and it also includes "Audio Summaries," which summarize documents in a conversation and podcast-like format. It can also write and run code and create visualizations of data.

In addition to text files, NotebookLM can process PDF files, websites, YouTube videos, Google Docs, and Google Slides. The content it uses is for summarization or for answering questions. When using NotebookLM, you can control what kind of information the AI uses as the basis for the content it creates, and you receive clear source references.

Why use NotebookLM with UiO login?

UiO is implementing NotebookLM with UiO login because many have requested it. The advantage is that when you use NotebookLM with UiO login, your personal data is not used to further train the model, and your data resides on European data centers. You now have a privacy-safe and free access to NotebookLM, and you should not use NotebookLM without UiO login in connection with work or studies.

NotebookLM with UiO login is approved for information up to the yellow data category. However, remember that NotebookLM is a tool that uses artificial intelligence and must be used in accordance with UiO's guidelines and rules for the use of AI tools as outlined on the UiO website about AI and UiO's guidelines for AI-generated content in UiO's digital channels. Additionally, there are specific terms that apply to NotebookLM.

How do I get started?

To use NotebookLM with UiO login, you must first be a UiO user of Google Workspace. Being a UiO user of Google Workspace is also free, and if you are not already, you can become one quickly. Read more about Google Workspace at UiO.

Once you are a UiO user of Google Workspace, the connection between your UiO account and Google is established, and you can log into NotebookLM with your UiO username and password.
