A chemical retrospective as the institute prepares for convergence research environments and the Life Sciences Building
The Department of Chemistry made history in 1969 when Odd Hassel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Together with skilled colleagues he helped develop an electron-diffraction apparatus capable of imaging chemical structures. Since then, the department has nurtured many strong research groups. Now the institute is entering a new phase as it prepares to move into the Life Sciences Building.?

"Deep sea mountaineers" on seamounts in the Arctic Ocean
It is nearing the end of GoNorth’s research cruise in the Arctic Ocean. Recently, researchers Carmen Gaina and Alexander Minakov (University of Oslo) and Thomas Funck (GEUS) succeeded in collecting seismic data and ROV images from the Polarstern seamount in the deep sea.

PhD candidate Jacqueline Kay Knutson (University of Oslo and NIVA) has received this year’s student award in the F?griprisen for an article about the irreversible landscape changes when permafrost disappears.
