Internal research support at the Department of Education (IPED)

Research funds are intended to provide a minimum level of support necessary to develop research, publishing and internationalization in the academic positions. The support can be used for conference participation with an accepted paper and publication plan, for participation in research courses, and for services related to conducting and publishing research. In some cases, the funds may be used to purchase technical equipment, provided that the purchase is made through UiO’s procurement system and the equipment is not available for loan or rental internally at IPED or UV. The funds may not be used to buy out teaching duties.

The maximum allocation per year is NOK 30,000 for employees in permanent positions as professor, associate professor (f?rsteamanuensis) or researcher; NOK 20,000 for employees in permanent positions as lecturer (lektor); and NOK 25,000 per year for doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers in department-funded positions. The funds normally cannot be carried over after the end of the year.

Emeriti will normally not be granted internal research funds. The same applies to employees in adjunct positions (Professor II). Employees in part-time positions may be granted proportionate support (for example, 50% of the amount for the position category if appointed at 50%).

Staff in permanent academic positions

  • A basic amount of NOK 5,000 is allocated automatically in January each year, or upon starting a new position.
  • In addition, funds may be awarded upon application. The ceiling for these funds is NOK 25,000 per year for employees in permanent positions as professor, associate professor (f?rsteamanuensis) or researcher, and NOK 15,000 per year for employees in permanent positions as lecturer (lektor). There is one application deadline each year, in January. The scheme has the following application categories:
    • Conference participation with a paper and a publication plan.
    • Language editing (proofreading), translation and other expenses related to publishing.

Doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers?

Employees in department-funded recruitment positions are automatically allocated a sum of NOK 25,000 per year. The total maximum amount over the employment period shall correspond to NOK 25,000 per year — for example NOK 100,000 for employees in four-year positions. During extended leaves such as parental leave or long-term sick leave, the annual allocation is reduced in proportion to the leave period and the employment is extended accordingly. Employees who commence, re-enter or leave their position at the institute during the year will normally receive a proportional allocation.

Project-funded doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers and researchers are expected to have a corresponding amount covered by the project’s operating budget. From January 2026, newly hired staff in such positions will not be granted internal research funds from the institute. For employees on projects that started earlier, support may be granted as a transitional arrangement, adjusted to the project’s operating budget.

The research funds are also intended to cover conference participation during the doctoral/postdoctoral period. Use of the funds should therefore be discussed with the supervisor.

Language editing of doctoral thesis (kappe)?

Language editing of the thesis cape is covered up to NOK 16,000. You do not need to apply for these funds, but you must contact Head of Office Elin S?rensen to obtain the subproject number to be charged.

If you have questions, please contact Jennie Katrine Urang.
