Moving process

Information about the moving process.

Updated 16 September with updated moving information from UiO.

The moving will occur in several phases, in 2026 and 2027.

Who is moving in?

  • Department of Chemistry UiO
  • Department of Pharmacy UiO
  • Department of Biosciences, except Ancient DNA laboratory UiO
  • Norwegian Centre for Molecular Biosciences and Medicine (NCMBM), UiO
  • Parts of the Institute of Oral Biology UiO
  • Parts of the Division of Laboratory Medicine OUS
  • Several academic communities from the Faculty of Medicine UiO
  • Interdisciplinary life science research groups for shorter or longer periods
  • UiO Growth House UiO
  • Parts of Library of Medicine and Science UiO
  • Around 300 master's students

Moving process for UiO

The moving to the Life science building is set to start in the second quarter of 2026. Most of you will move in 2026, but some will relocate in 2027.

According to the plan, the move-in will occur in three phases. Each phase takes approximately three months and is subdivided into smaller moves.

There may be changes and delays. Challenges, unforeseen occurrences, faults, and difficulties with approvals and permissions may still arise. This could lead to delays and alterations in the timeline. Greater certainty about the plans will come during the autumn, and with each passing day, the chances of delay decrease.

Moving phase 1

Areas 4, 5 and 6 is planned to be ready 2 March and the moving is set to start in April-May. .

Areas ready for occupation:

  • parts of Department of Chemistry
  • pars of Department of Pharmacy
  • the University Library
  • the new aquarium facility in field 6 for NCMBM

Detailed planning is underway, and the goal is for each group to be allocated a time period for packing and a moving date. For many, it will be most convenient to begin as the semester comes to a close and the summer holiday season approaches.

Moving phase 2

Areas 7m 8 and the eastern tower is planned to be ready in June, and moving is set to start at the end of June.

Areas ready for occupation:

  • Department of Chemistry
  • Department of Pharmacy
  • NCMBM
  • parts of the Department of Biosciences

Moving during the summer may affect holiday schedules for some of you. However, it ensures that everyone is settled in before the semester fully begins in September.

Moving phase 3

Areas 1, 2 and 3, as well as the western tower, will not be completed until the very end of 2026.

Areas ready for occupation:

  • Department of Biosciences
  • Department of Oral Biology
  • Division of Laboratory Medicine (OUS)
  • cafeteria and teaching areas

UiO has requested renovations and modifications in certain areas that must be ready for relocation. This means that some teaching and environments may be relocated to the Life science building no earlier than the first half of 2027.

How are we organising the move?

The moving project at UiO is a sub-project under the reception project and is coordinated with Statsbygg's moving project. The moving agency is First Mover Group (FMG), and the project leader for UiO is Kjetil Taaje.

Significant efforts have already been made to catalogue the scientific equipment that will be moved. The moving project will continue to develop a detailed inventory of everything that needs to be packed and included in the move. The use groups (IG-grupper) are involved in this work.

Testing before moving

For UiO to utilise the building, phase 1 must be fully constructed and tested. Statsbygg must obtain temporary occupancy permits before the building can be opened for you.

The first to move in will be the operations team from the UiO Estate Department, who, along with Statsbygg's property management and the OUS operations team, will manage the building. Services such as access control, cleaning, waste disposal, and temporary goods reception need to be established.

Before you can move, the reception project must ensure necessary transport routes for all items being moved, and new furniture and scientific equipment must be set up, assembled, and installed.

Use groups (IG-grupper)

Use groups (in Norwegian “Ibruktakelsesgrupper (IG-grupper)”) comprise members from the user environments that will be relocating to the new spaces, and will help test the building. User and move coordinators have also been appointed within these environments.

The groups will work with defined areas, describe relevant work processes, and create tests that align with the activities intended for the spaces.

Downtime when moving

The move into specific lab areas will take around 1-2 weeks, but the scale will vary. Moving office spaces will take 1-4 days.

Downtime refers to packing, moving, and unpacking. Downtime ends when the affected area is operational.

There will be differences in downtime for the different groups moving in. Several factors may influence this. Some groups may experience only a few days of downtime, but areas with more advanced scientific equipment may face longer downtimes, especially when external vendor assistance is needed.
