New employees at NHM should experience a well-organised introduction and feel welcomed when they start their new jobs at the museum. In accordance with UiO's onboarding procedures, we strive to provide comprehensive and structured support to new employees throughout their first year of employment.
NHM's procedures apply to new employees in permanent and long-term temporary positions across all departments of the museum, including both scientific and technical-administrative roles. For short-term temporary positions, the manager decides on the extent and duration of the follow-up.
Onboarding
The initial period in a new job is crucial for the new employee, the manager, and the museum, as it lays much of the foundation for the new employee's well-being, inclusion, and long-term success. Settling into a new job can take several months. During this time, the new employee - especially those coming from abroad - often experiences intensive learning and adjustment processes. A well-prepared and well-executed onboarding process is key to supporting them through this transition and benefits all parties involved.
Onboarding Objectives
The onboarding process should be tailored to the new employee's needs and help them to:
- Quickly integrate into the organisational culture at NHM and understand the museum's role.
- Understand their role and responsibilities.
- Familiarise themselves with practical matters and relevant guidelines and procedures.
- Receive the necessary skills development and training.
- Establish essential connections.
Manager's Responsibility
The immediate manager is responsible for planning and executing the onboarding process and can involve and seek assistance from others.
Are you a manager expecting a new employee?
NHM has created a guide for planning and conducting the onboarding process.
Administration and HR Support
The administration plays an important role in supporting managers with practical and administrative tasks related to onboarding new employees.
In addition, the HR department provides clarifications, advice, and support to managers who have questions about the onboarding process.
Buddy
All new employees at NHM are assigned a buddy to assists the new employee with social inclusion and practical information during their first month.
The manager selects a suitable buddy. It is important that the buddy’s responsibilities are clarified in collaboration with both the new employee's manager and the buddy's manager.
