After ten years of preparation, the first of the Viking ships will be relocated to a new museum, where the ships can be preserved and displayed for posterity. The final journey of the Oseberg Ship begins on 10 September.
The Viking ships are a world heritage overseen by the University of Oslo on behalf of future generations – not only in Norway but across the globe as well.
It was no longer feasible to leave the ships in the old museum. Had no action been taken, they would eventually have collapsed.
The new museum building is both climate- and vibration-proof. The relocation of the ships there has been planned for ten years. The project is unique – nothing of the sort has ever been done before anywhere in the world.
